And so it is Christmas…a time of joy and celebration. The hustle and bustle of the season brings families and friends from far away places together. There are Christmas carols sung and an excitement in the air… but along with this joy, there may still be suffering. Families may be faced to know that deep in their hearts, this Christmas may possibly be the last one with their loved one.
When I visit a dying patient in their home this special time of the year, I can’t help but stop for a moment to notice that many times right next to the patient’s bed is a beautifully decorated tree with shining twinkling lights. I often think to myself, how can the family still have the energy and willingness to put up the lights, decorations and a Christmas tree with all of this sadness. I believe that the answer is “hope”. Hope in love, and in finding peace, and in sharing those precious moments with their loved one and creating memories that will sustain and feed their spirit. There is so much joy in these homes – actually there is more joy than sadness.
It renews my belief in the human spirit and is proof to me that love does prevail over all.
Have a very Merry Christmas filled with peace and love and healthy, joyful holiday season…
